Dedebit made history by winning a record fourth Ethiopia Women’s Premier League (EWPL) title on Saturday 7 July at the Addis-Ababa Stadium.
It was a fairytale finish for the defending champions as they beat Gedio Dilla 3-1 in their final match to finish the season unbeaten on 44 points and with a mammoth 41 goals.
The holders picked a comfortable win despite missing their star striker Loza Abera who is in trials in Swedish second-tier side Kungsbacka IF.
Goals by Birtukan GebreKirstos and Beza Alemayehu and an own goal by Menderin Endehun completed the invincible season for Dedebit.
Lethal striker Sara Nefso netted Dilla’s consolation goal to score her tenth of the season and claim the bronze boot.
The silver boot went to Ethiopia Women’s National Team’s skipper Rehima Zerga who netted 12 goals for the Bankers this season.
Abera on 17 goals finished as the topscorer yet again, making it four consecutive seasons that she has bagged the EWPL golden boot.
Three successive titles
In winning the title, the Blues bag their third title in a row, having won the maiden EWPL title in 2012 before Nigid Bank picked three successive titles.
Dedebit returned to the throne in 2016 and since then, Nigid Bank have had to settle for a second-place finish.
The 2017/18 season proved no different with the Bankers finishing second on 38 points despite their emphatic 4-1 win over Gedio Dilla in their final match.
Defence Force secured third-place following a 2-1 win over Adama City and Hawassa City’s goalless draw against relegated Sidama Coffee.
Relegated Ethio-Electric also managed to finish with a point in the bag after forcing a 2-2 draw against Dire Dawa.
With that, curtains come down on the first season of the new-look EWPL, which featured 10 teams and saw the introduction of a second-tier.
Four teams have been promoted while two have been relegated so as have 12 top-tier teams starting the 2018/19 season.
The season done, focus now for Ethiopia turns to the national team who will be suiting up in the 2018 Cecafa Women’s Senior Challenge Cup set for 19-27 July in Kigali, Rwanda.
