MILESTONE: Lloyd nets 100th goal for USA in win over Mexico

Captain Carli Lloyd scored her 100th career international goal in USA’s 6-2 win over Mexico on Sunday.

The two-time FIFA Player of the Year, guided the ball into the net to give USA a 3-2 lead in the 34th minute.

Lloyd, 35, becomes the sixth American to reach 100 goals after Abby Wambach (184), Mia Hamm (158), Kristine Lilly (130), Michelle Akers (107) and Tiffany Milbrett (100).

Star of the resounding win was Megan Rapinoe, though, who bagged four assists and a goal.

Rapinoe placed the ball for teen star Mallory Pugh to open the scoring three minutes in.

But Mónica Ocampo and Kiana Palacios scored off set-pieces to place Mexico ahead by the 24th minute.

The hosts were swift to respond with Lindsey Horan and Lloyd scoring in quick succession to restore the USA’s lead.

A minute to the break, Alex Morgan connected with Rapinoe’s through ball to score her first of the night.

Rapinoe chipped home from the mid for USA’s fifth in the 64th minute before sending in a corner for Morgan to guide home to wrap up proceedings.

Earlier, on Thursday, USA strolled to a 4-1 win over Mexico in the first match of the double header friendly.

Like on Sunday, teen star Pugh broke the deadlock, Morgan bagged a brace and Lloyd was also on target.

Both nations were using the two-match friendly to prepare for the 2018 Concacaf Women’s Championship in October.

USA are set to play another double-header friendly against China in the next FIFA Women’s International Break set for June.
